Discover the beauty of words from the stone art with Wordist

How do you explore and collect different stones for your art creation?
K: I first started with the local gardening shops then I get obsessed with stone painting and began searching for different stones worldwide. My first stop was at a stone shop in a village of Norway in Europe where they have a variety of mineral stones. However, my favorite is a natural stone store located in Tokyo, Japan where their stones are original and unpolished. Each stone there has its own distinctive shape and pattern while the flaw brings out its unique character.

Can you share with us about your first artwork?

K: My first creation is a stone art with my surname “Kam” and that could be interpreted as a Chinese phrase which means bittersweet. Just like I enjoy pursuing my dream and embrace the uncertainty despite all the struggles and challenges.

How do you create a stone painting?

K: I hope to be known as a “Wordist” rather than an artist as word is always the thrust in my creation. For example, if I wish to convey a message of “stillness” through my stone painting, I would first research the etymology of “stillness”. Based on the distinctive pattern and color of the stone, I would then evolve with an inimitable style of painting that depicts the “stillness”.

Your painting gives life to the stone, can you share with us the idea behind?

K: Many words have interesting hidden meanings. I believe words have the power to enlighten us. I hope my stone painting can become an oasis in our minds and cheer up everyone in both good and bad times.

Apart from stones, have you ever used any other medium as your canvas?

K: I embellish old wooden pieces with intensely colorful and intricate art to make them lively again.
